Meerkats, a creature belonging to the mongoose family is predominantly a Southern African animal found in the Kalahari Desert in Botswana, the Namib Desert in Namibia and southwestern Angola and in South Africa. The animal distinguished easily from its trademark stance of standing erect on its hind feet and peering around with its huge almond eyes. Meercats have an acute sense of vision and hearing and can easily sense danger from at least 3 miles away. The animal is also an expert digger and can burrow underground tunnels at great speeds. It can dig up holes the size of their own body in a matter of seconds. Meerkats marvel at sun-bathing. It's a common sight for the gangs (consisting of 20 individuals) to come out of their burrows and spend time standing up and soaking up the sun. This South African desert animal is small in size and stands about two-and-a-half feet tall and can weight about 2.2 pounds (1 kg), equal to that of the squirrel.
