Honey bee is a creature one will associate with tropics or heavily forested places where flora abound. But there is one found in the unexpected habitat of the Himalayas at altitudes of 8000 to 10000 feet above sea-level. This species known as Apis dorsata laboriosa or the Himalayan giant honey bee happens to be the largest honey bee in the world. It can grow up to 3 cms in length and have huge nests built on the overhanging rocks of cliff faces. Extracted from the bees are especially known for the hallucinogenic honey or the mad honey that has hallucinogenic properties in it. The mad honey, extracted from the rhododendron flower, is deep amber in color with slight yellowish hues and has a sweet and unique taste. There is an entire tribe in Nepal called the Gurungs whose livelihood revolves around the hunting and catching of their rare species. Since the hallucinogenic honey is difficult to harvest and gain access to, because of the dangerous terrain the bees breed in, the cost of the honey is almost four times that of the normal ones found in foreign markets. Red Honey as it is also known has inherent medicinal and intoxicating properties that make it so appealing to users. Apart from Nepal, the giant Himalayan Honey bee is also found in the mountainous regions of Bhutan and the Chinese province of Yunnan and the Himalayan foothills of India.
